The NRA are right for the wrong reasons

How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame from a national media machine that rewards them with wall-to-wall attention and a sense of identity that they crave, while provoking others to try to make their mark.

A dozen more killers, a hundred more? How can we possibly even guess how many…?

Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President, National Rifle Association

The liberal media will find that offensive. They are hoping that the NRA and Wayne will get behind their politically correct crusade for “gun control” in American society. They cannot imagine a world where others may disagree, so the NRA will be painted as evil. Wayne LaPierre will be seen as the face of an intractable enemy unwilling to give up their privileges for the society at large. The NRA will blame everyone else – the liberal media, violent video games, opportunistic politicians- for this tragedy, rather than owning up to the fact that mass proliferation of guns is a real problem that needs to be addressed. The gun lobby will absolve itself of fault.

Unfortunately, Wayne LaPierre is right.

No gun ban will stop the next shooting tragedy waiting to happen.

The one thing they won’t mention is why they are right. Politically it would be stating the obvious and reveal their complicity in the problem at large, the propagation of a gun culture that forgets that the law was not written for the strong amongst us (responsible gun owners) but as a warning to the weakest of will, criminals and deranged killers who would use guns to commit mass shootings. In fact, there is a resentment by the NRA in the glee that the media takes in publishing the “next piece of bad news that sells newspapers”. LaPierre is right that the politically crusade is a false one.

The horse has already bolted.

Pandora’s box is already open.

The country is already awash with guns.

Banning guns would not solve the issue tomorrow, and will take a generation to fix. Not only that, many citizens who enjoy their right to wield guns will fight tooth-and-nail to retain them and to resist restrictions to gun ownership. These God-fearing folk will always be at odds with the politically correct liberal media that, while their push to lower gun escalation is correct, the media always move to absolve a deep malaise within American culture related to too much consumption, consumerism, too much indulgence, too much entitlement. It is easy for a citizen’s moral compass in such a morass to value sating addiction and being a slave to sin over living principled and productive lives.

You can try to put the demons back into the box, but while mass proliferation of assault weapons is already present in the marketplace, it would be easy for a deranged killer to obtain weapons on the black market or, in the case of Adam Lanza, raid his mother’s gun cabinet of legimately procured weapons.

To summarise, the short term aim should by to have security guards in schools. There are too many deranged killers in American society that it is inevitable that they will strike again so, especially since they have such easy access in a society awash with automatic firearms. It is impossible to stop it now that the genie is out of the bottle, so the best that can be done is to attempt to mitigate the damage done by centuries of martial tradition.

The long term aim, however, should be national disarmament as well as a restoration of values that make America a great nation. An emphasis on hard work, on duty, responsibility, personal improvement and on productivity rather than flushing the brain on narcotic drugs, on sloth, alcohol and pasttimes that glorify violence. The worst thing that America must shake is the socialist mindset of “someone else will pay for it”, or “someone else will fix it”… charity begins at home.

America has a two-fold problem: deranged and mental health issues caused by moral degradation of American society, and secondly their access to readily available high-capacity automatic weapons.

On this both the liberals and the gun lobby have to agree to compromise. American children deserve better than a collision between America’s gun and consumer culture, a collision between the gun lobby and the PC Lobby. America deserves better.

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.”

Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird
