One of the Israeli military‘s most visible spokesmen is under fire for a photo he posted on hisFacebook page captioned “Obama style” in which his face is smeared with mud.

Sacha Dratwa posted the photo in late September, but since the furor he has restricted access to his account. A screengrab of the original post circulating online showed that it drew mixed reactions, with one commenter saying, “You know this is racist, yeah?”

In the photo, Dratwa appears to be smeared in mud from the Dead Sea, a popular activity for many visiting and living in Israel. Dratwa responded to a user on Twitter accusing him of racism saying, “I’m not a racist, please stop [spreading] lies about me.” He also posted a response on Facebook saying the firestorm around the photo misrepresents his opinions and is a “cynical use of the information” on his profile.

“I am, and have always been, completely candid about my beliefs and have nothing to hide,” wrote Dratwa on Sunday. “The aforementioned photos do not reflect my beliefs and have no bearing whatsoever on my position in the IDF.”

I don’t get this uproar over blackface in the modern day. I think it’s gone too far. This is not blackface. Blackface was a hooligan-like depiction of African Americans usually via some comedic stage-show that portrayed them as lesser folk, a ridiculously offensive and racist depiction. To me, this here is not blackface.

Moreover, how can someone be labelled a racist if they pretty obviously did not mean any racial harm by it? It seems fairly reasonable to assume that this man, Sacha Dratwa, if anything, probably admires Obama. He might not have the great man’s giant ears, but you know, I bet if he could also pick those out of the ground and stick them on the side of his head he would!

I don’t know… America, you’re a bit soft aren’t you? I get that this whole “be careful not to be racist” thing is a sensitive issue, especially over there… it’s about respect right? I get that… but I’m not really seeing the big deal here… how is this that disrespectful?   Does that make rubber Obama masks kids buy at your local, racist, because they tint it to more closely suit his skin colour?

I guess my point is this: Is this really on par with TRUE oldskool blackface, the kind that had the underlying message of inferiority attached to it? No. I don’t think so, Tim. To be honest I don’t think Obama himself would find this racist or offensive, he is a sensible person who knows the difference between true racism and mere imitation.

Bottom line is, anyone who falls off their chair or has to leave the room due to the utter offence of this is kidding themselves and needs to grow a pair.
