Should prisoners be billed per night they stay in Prison?

A jail located in Riverside County, California, thinks so. In order to save money in these tough economic times, the county is proposing to charge their inmates around US $140 per night for their, beds, health care, food, including the luxuries of being sprayed with a strong hose and a beating.

Humour aside, it’s common knowledge that some homeless people deliberately offend in order to be caught and jailed because they simply can’t afford to stay anywhere else. Charging criminals who can’t afford the accommodation fee is a little illogical.

But when applied to rich celebrities like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan etc, it starts to make a bit of sense. Why do they go to jail for free? I believe a jail-time fee should take into account the offenders salary, etc.

A normal hotel in the states is US$180 per night.

After the initial thought of “serves the bastards right”, logic sets in: How can many of these people, when they leave prison, will re-offend rather than pay off the amounts billed in jail? Would the Riverside County jail charge some criminals by applying a credit debt? Or does the family get the bill?

It’s the same old misplaced logic as fining prostitutes: they will just get back out there and earn more money to pay the fine.

In my opinion, charging criminals for time spent in jails will work if they only bill those who can afford it, and only in certain circumstances, otherwise this will cause a spike in re-offences. On the other hand, it would be a further deterrent to those who have money. I pay for my groceries, I paid for my bed, I pay my rent and health insurance and I don’t commit crimes. Why, if someone has committed a crime, should they suddenly get out of paying for these necessary bills?
